Laparoscopic Surgery

What is laparoscopic surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery involves 3 or 4 small incisions on the abdomen through which special instruments are passed. The gynaecologist is able to see inside the body through an instrument called a laparoscope.
This instrument is a form of telescope with a fibre-optic light source. Through a miniature video camera connected to it, a very clear image of the inside of the body is transmitted to a TV monitor.
What are the advantages of Laparoscopic surgery?
  1. As the image is magnified, the surgeon can see the areas of disease more clearly, and bleeding is more easily avoided during surgery.
  2. Post-operative pain is very much reduced, as the incisions on the abdomen are small, usually between 5 to 15 mm in length. Hence, hospital stay is shortened as compared to conventional surgery where large incisions are made.
  3. The small incisions also result in better cosmesis, in most cases.
What are the indications of Laparoscopic Surgery
  1. Infertility investigations.
  2. Ectopic pregnancy
  3. Ovarian cysts and tumours.
  4. Uterine fibroids.
  5. Urinary incontinence
  6. Womb prolapse.
  7. Early stages of cervical and uterine cancers.
